Brigid
In honor of Imbolc, we celebrate Brigid, the Celtic Goddess of wisdom, poetry, healing, protection, smithing and domesticated animals.
One of the most revered mythic and religious figures in Ireland, Brigid is celebrated around the world on February 1, marking the beginning of Spring on the pagan calendar.
A beautiful description of Brigid from our sister, Alisa Rose, aka The Gold Country Witch to welcome Imbolc:
Beannachtí lá Bríd! Today has marked the first day of spring in the natural calendar! We are beginning to shift and stir from our long winter sleep. Early blooms kiss the sky, tempting the Sun to rise from his own winters sleep. The warmth awakens something within.
This holy day is especially sacred to the ancient goddess Bríd, more commonly known as Brigid or Bride.
Though primarily associated with Ireland, reflections of her are sprinkled throughout the Celtic world. But, Ireland lays special claim to her as the home of her most famous and sacred wells and as a patron Saint to Ireland alongside Saint Patrick. She is the surviving image and spirit of the ancient goddess, presiding over mothers and babies, midwives, animal husbandry, writing, metal smithing, the holy wells and sacred fires of her sacred sites… wherever there is the miracle of birth and divine creative life force, she is there.
